When thinking about choosing a major...

Student should be able to talk about why they want to major in an area for approximately 10 minutes; good indicator if they have done enough research.

Many students in my focus group yesterday (READY), stated that their advisors are simply giving them the courses that they should take and not really involving them in the process at all. I think that this is one area of my job that I do exceptionally well. Yes, it takes a little longer... but ultimately the students are "learning how to fish" for their own information and advise themselves and secondly, we are fostering a working relationship should they need anything in the future.

We also discussed electives that students might be interested in taking. Not surprisingly, video gaming was mentioned as well as painting and dance for non-majors. They also expressed interest in Art therapy and pet therapy. They won't really opposed to any certain areas for electives other than historical/general education tied coursework.
