This is a student population that I don't currently have much involvement with but at some point in the future I would love to sit on a reentry committee.
One potential responsibility that I may have is to oversee the ACT NOW program come the summer. I have been working with this program for 2 years now and always find it challenging, but rewarding. Hopefully this information will assist me and other with this population.
Effectiveness of Intrusive Advising with At-Risk Students
* Intrusive interventions (i.e., personal contact) outperforms impersonal interventions
Predictors of Success for Reinstated Students
* GPA at time of dismissal
* GPA earned while away
* Length of time spent away didn't seem to have any impact
Causes, Reactions, and Consequences of Academic Probation
* Internal-uncontrollable factors- personality, self-concept, health, unassessed learning disability
* Internal-Controllable factors- study habits, preparation, values, and motivation
* External-stable factors- family and social enviornments
* External-unstable factors- courses and instructors
If a student attributes their failure to an internal-uncontrollable or external stable cause, she or he can reasonably predict contnued failure whereas is failure is attributed to an internal-controllable or external unstable cause, there is a chance for improvement, but future performance is dependent on student behavior
Reinstatement committees need to meet on a regular basis
Stagger implementation of program requirements
Interview students who are up for reinstatement
Make advisement mandatory for reinstated students
Writing sample from student
Formal reinstatement agreement with university and advisor
Midterm progress reports
Reduce credit hour load from 15 to 12
2.00 to 2.25 minimum GPA requirement
Academic transitions day (Group meeting in the morning and then break out to meet with individual advisors)
Reinstatement workshop/series (Small group with a student who was reinstated; Myer's Briggs assessment)
